Biography

Claire Grant combines landscapes and personal experiences with alternative photography, working in cyanotype and incorporating encaustic wax into delicate prints on paper or textiles. Using light as her medium, she works with the sun, natural botanical elements, and water to form environmental imprints of time and place.

Her practice extends the historic printing styles typical of analogue photography into abstraction and experimentation. Landscapes are suggested through simplified horizon lines and hints of floral forms, or printed on fragile paper ephemera.

Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, she studied Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury and Museum Studies at the University of Queensland. Recent solo exhibitions include Milk Run at NorthSite Contemporary Arts (2023), Up in the Air at PhotoAccess Canberra and the Queensland College of Art Project Gallery (2022), and In-Flight at Vacant Assembly (2021). She has been a finalist in the Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize (2023), Milburn Art Prize for Landscape (2021) and the Banyule Award for Art on Paper (2021) and exhibited in group shows at Casula Powerhouse, OuterSpace, Brisbane Powerhouse, KEPK Space, Vacant Assembly, Side Gallery, and Byron School of Arts.

She is freelance arts writer with recent work for Garland Magazine, ArtsHub, Lemonade: Letters to Art, and the publication re.source for the Sustainable Darkroom, UK.

Grant currently lives in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia.
