Thirty-six Views of Queensland (from my galley window), 2019 - 2021
Cyanotype and encaustic on washi paper, 12cm x 12cm each

This series is inspired by an aerial view of the landscape, viewed through my tiny galley window in the rear of a dash-8 Q400 aircraft. Snaking rivers are formed by a batik inspired encaustic wax-resist and the skies are filled with dandelions and feathers symbolising flight. The title is an homage to ukiyo-e master Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji which famously utilised the striking Prussian Blue pigment which is also created in the oxidation of ferrous ferrocyanide salts during the cyanotype process. Prussian Blue had only recently been introduced to Japan from Europe and was a popular colour choice in aizuri-e woodblock printing.
